It's an excellent example of Poe at his most restrained, where he doesn't give in to the impulse to get hysterical for effect. I'd also recommend Dostoevsky's "The Double" for a more sustained and almost grounded example of this absurdist-Gothic trope.
I always loved Poe's "William Wilson", finding it quietly unsettling.
