Spun is indeed fantastic. I haven't seen Jesus' Son yet, but really like Denis Johnson and the book. Those short stories, I found very stylishly affecting. That voice is goooooooooood.

I think they did justice to that voice, partly melancholic, partly hip and insouciant. Just having Dennis Hopper and Jack Black helps with that of course.

I will be mainlining one or both of these Saturday. By the way, I love stoner rock and stoner metal but hate being stoned. So I know what you mean.

In a word, Jesus' Son = affecting drama, Spun = wild comedy

Enjoyed this, APM!

On the point of some of the best drug-inspired fiction coming from sober writers - I've always loved the fact Richard E Grant in 'Withnail and I' manages some of the most memorable drunk / high acting, despite being allergic to alcohol. Apparently the film's Director, Bruce Robinson, got Grant drunk the night before they started filming, so that he would experience being drunk for the first time.

A supremely British drug-addled comedy, with a little tragedy thrown in.

Thanks very much for your kind words and the indication about Withnail.

In fact I did a comparison of Withnail with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in an earlier installment here!
