One of my all-time favorite films (Barry Lyndon, that is.) And I agree with you, the Kubrickian coldness people see in this film is something of a critical cliche. To me, at least, the first half is legitimately funny and entertaining. And, in the second half, I find the death of Brian Lyndon to be a truly moving scene.

Any thoughts on Fellini's Casanova?

Honestly have not seen it. One of the few Fellini films I haven't seen, probably because it's not on Criterion.
