Kafka's two seminal novels were so singular for their medium, the printed word, that I can't imagine taking on the Herculean task of adapting them to film. I guess those two directors are Hercules.
They surely were both unafraid of the task, though Haneke took the relatively easy route of going very literal and realistic, cutting out the more expressionistic and nightmarish elements of The Castle.
